Intra-College Debate Competition 2082 Concluded Successfully at Himalayan WhiteHouse College of Law

The Intra-College Debate Competition 2082 organized by Himalayan WhiteHouse College of Law was successfully concluded on 26th of February 2026 at the college premises. The final round of the competition brought together some of the most talented debaters from the first and second year of the B.A. LL. B program, creating an intellectually engaging platform for students to showcase their analytical thinking, public speaking abilities, and understanding of contemporary constitutional issues.
The debate was conducted in the British Parliamentary Debate format .The motion for the final round was “This House Believes that Freedom of Expression Should Protect Offensive Political Speech.” The motion encouraged participants to critically examine the scope of freedom of expression in a democratic society and discuss whether offensive political speech should be protected under the principle of free speech. The discussion led to insightful arguments related to democratic tolerance, constitutional rights, the possible harm of offensive speech, and the balance between individual liberty and social responsibility.
Four finalist teams competed in the final round of the competition, with each team consisting of one finalist from the first year and one from the second year. Throughout the debate, all teams demonstrated impressive debating skills by presenting well-structured arguments,
responding to opposing viewpoints, and engaging in strong rebuttals. Their performances reflected a thoughtful understanding of legal and political principles related to freedom of expression.
The competition was evaluated by a panel of judges consisting of Ms. Sandhya Sitaula, Ms.Salina Kafle and Mr. Nirab Gyawali, who assessed the teams based on their argumentation, clarity of reasoning, delivery, and overall debating performance.
After a competitive and intellectually stimulating debate, team consisting of Debyani Adhikari and Merita Pokharel, secured the first position, while team represented by Suvekshya Adhikari and Sacheta Adhikari, became the runner-up. Team of Bimala Dulal and Bimala Devi B.K., secured the third position, while team represented by Stuti Khadka and Aastha Yadav, finished in fourth place.
In addition to the team awards, individual recognitions were also presented for outstanding performance. Debyani Adhikari was awarded Best Speaker from the first year, while Suvekshya Adhikari was recognized as the Best Speaker from the second year for their exceptional clarity, persuasive arguments, and confident delivery during the debate.
Following the announcement of the results, the judges provided valuable feedback to the participants, appreciating the students for their thoughtful engagement with a complex and sensitive topic such as freedom of expression and offensive political speech. They highlighted the importance of debate competitions in developing critical thinking, legal reasoning, and advocacy skills among law students and encouraged all participants to continue engaging in similar academic and intellectual activities in the future.
The program concluded with closing remarks from Principal Anushka Bhattarai, who congratulated all the participants for their dedication and impressive performances. She highlighted the importance of debate competitions in nurturing confident and articulate future legal professionals and encouraged students to continue cultivating the habit of informed discussion and critical analysis. The Chairman of the college, Shiva Sharma Paudel, also shared his remarks, appreciating the efforts of the students and organizers in making the event successful. He emphasized that such academic activities play an important role in shaping the intellectual and professional development of law students.
The successful completion of the Intra-College Debate Competition 2082 once again reflected the commitment of Himalayan WhiteHouse College of Law to promote academic excellence, intellectual discourse, and meaningful engagement among its students.
